Kanawha Cased Glass Hand Blown Pitcher in Red and Orange

This strikingly colorful small pitcher is hand blown cased glass (glass that has layers of colors). It was made by Kanawha Glass in Dunbar, West Virginia in the 1970's. The piece measures 5" tall and 4" wide at its widest point. The pitcher would originally have had a foil label from Kanawha.

Kanawha Glass Company West Virginia, USA 1955 – 1989

Former employees of the Dunbar Glass Co. formed the Kanawha Glass Co. in 1955 after Dunbar closed in 1953. The new company was located in West Virginia and named after the Kanawha River.

At first Kanawha produced colorless cut and etched glass items. By the 1960’s it competed with Blenko, Rainbow, Pilgrim, Viking and other popular mid-20th century glass makers producing colorful stylized retro mod forms. Kanawha provided the fashionable glass of the time offering many forms in crackle glass, a wide array of bright colors and exaggerated forms.

In the 1970’s opaque cased glass was popular and Kanawha produced decors such as Peachblow and Milk Glass. Molds were often used and the molded items are recognizable by their distinctive base. Kanawha Glass offered hand blown forms also, but they are hard to find today. Kanawha was purchased by another glass company in 1987 and closed its doors forever in 1989.

We sell select vintage items. They are not new, and rarely look new. They are, in many cases, older than we are, and have seen life and times. We do not repair or replace parts on any of the items we sell. They came to us in the condition they are now, and are sold as is.

When we say an item is in “excellent vintage condition”, we mean just that – it is in excellent condition for its age. We are very particular about what we buy and sell, and describe things to the best of our ability, in a fair and accurate way. Please - closely review the photos using the zoom tool, and pay attention to the descriptions of the items you wish to purchase. If you have questions about anything at all, we will gladly answer them prior to your purchase.

Our packing materials may be unsightly, albeit brilliantly effective. We try to reuse as much material as possible from our business. We wish you would use it again, too.

WE DO COMBINE SHIPPING. Let us know! We'll give you a total and adjust the listing prior to your purchase.
