ELZAC Victim of Fashion THREE 1940S Vintage Hand Crafted Ceramic Brooches

Always whimsical, ELZAC, which was a much needed “lift” for women during WWII when worry loss, and responsibility weighed heavily on the spirit on the home front.

Elzac pins were made in the 1940s in California and decorated by a cottage industry with ceramic, fabric, wood beads, leather snippets, since metals, rubber and other materials that could be used for the war effort were unavailable for frivolous costume and fashion jewelry. Elzac pieces were never signed – a few were marked with paper tags or stickers which most women removed before wearing. The Elzac style is very distinctive and listed in many jewelry collectible books.

It was the work of the ELZAC company of California. The company operated only a short time during WWII. This piece was probably part of their “Victim of Fashion” series. ELZAC was
best known for its fashionable “pin-up” face brooches and whimsical animals. They used ceramic, metals, fabrics, feathers, celluloid and lucite in their creations. One owner, Elliott Handler
and his wife, later went on to help found the Mattel Toy Company™.

Pressed, molded or blown glass has imperfections from the manufacturing process. These imperfections are inherited from production and are not considered damage. These minor imperfections often occur, such as: small defects in hand painting, color variations, creases or lines from molds, tiny air bubbles or small debris encased in glass is considered natural and is not going to be scrutinized or considered damage. However, we will make note if I notice any larger imperfections that appear to be beyond the acceptable norm, as a defect.
